Jeremiah Munoz Reflection Blog: How Communication Shapes Every Group
How Communication Shapes Every Group
Before working on this assignment, I never really thought deeply about how communication affects every group we are part of in everyday life. While completing Chapter 9 and preparing my group presentation, I realized that communication is what keeps groups connected, organized, and supportive. Whether it is within families, friendships, or support systems, communication influences how people interact with each other and how relationships are built over time.
For our presentation, my section focused on the nature and types of groups, including families, social groups, and support groups. At first, I thought the chapter would mostly be about basic definitions and group examples, but I quickly realized there was much more depth to the topic. One of the most interesting things I learned was how communication patterns within families can shape the way people behave and communicate later in life. The textbook explained that families are often the first group people experience, which means they play a major role in developing communication habits, confidence, and emotional support.
One part of the chapter that stood out to me was the idea of family communication patterns. Before this assignment, I had never thought about how different families communicate in completely different ways. Learning about protective, consensual, pluralistic, and laissez faire family patterns helped me better understand why people respond differently in conversations and group situations. Some families are very strict and authority based, while others encourage open discussion and shared decision making. I found it interesting how these patterns can influence how people handle conflict, teamwork, and relationships outside the home as well.
While reading about these communication styles, I started reflecting on my own experiences growing up and the way communication happened in my family. I realized that many people naturally carry communication habits from their family environment into school, friendships, and even the workplace. This made the chapter feel more personal and relatable instead of just another textbook lesson. It also helped me better understand how communication can either strengthen relationships or create misunderstandings depending on how people express themselves.
Another important topic discussed in the chapter was social groups. Social groups are made up of people who genuinely care about one another and enjoy spending time together. These groups can include friend groups, sports teams, clubs, coworkers, or even online communities. This section stood out to me because it reflected situations most people experience every day. Communication in social groups is important because it helps people feel included, accepted, and supported. I also liked how the textbook explained that healthy communication in social groups includes encouraging quieter people to participate and protecting others from negative behavior or exclusion.
I found the section about support groups especially meaningful. Support groups bring together people who are dealing with similar struggles or experiences, such as grief, addiction recovery, trauma, or emotional challenges. I realized how important communication is in these environments because people need to feel safe enough to express deeply personal emotions and experiences. This part of the chapter showed me that communication is not only about talking but also about listening, understanding, and creating emotional support for others. Support groups rely heavily on trust, honesty, encouragement, and respectful communication to help people heal and feel less alone.
Working on the actual presentation also taught me a lot about communication and teamwork. Since this was a group assignment, communication between group members was important from the beginning. We had to divide responsibilities, share ideas, and make sure everyone understood their section of the chapter. One thing I enjoyed about the project was the creative freedom we were given. Instead of simply putting large amounts of text on slides, we focused on creating visually appealing slides with images, keywords, and organized layouts. This helped make the presentation more engaging and easier for the audience to follow.
At first, I was worried about speaking in front of the class, but preparing my slides and speaker notes helped me feel more confident. I learned that presentations are much better when the speaker talks naturally instead of reading directly from the screen. I also realized that visual design plays a major role in communication. Images, colors, layouts, and organization can affect how an audience understands information and stays interested during a presentation. Creating slides that looked modern and creative made me feel more invested in the project overall.
Another thing I learned from this assignment is how communication affects people emotionally. Groups are not only about completing tasks or spending time together. They also provide belonging, encouragement, and emotional support. Families shape our first communication experiences, social groups help people feel connected, and support groups help people through difficult situations. Without communication, these relationships would not function effectively. This assignment made me realize how important communication truly is in everyday life, even in situations people may not notice immediately.
In the end, this assignment helped me better understand the importance of communication within different types of groups. It also helped me reflect on my own experiences with family communication, friendships, teamwork, and public speaking. Through this project, I learned that communication is what creates trust, connection, and support between people. Whether in families, social groups, or support groups, communication shapes relationships and influences how people interact with one another every day. This chapter changed the way I think about groups and helped me recognize how much communication impacts our lives both personally and socially.
Really good post. Well written and thoughtful!
