Eric Perez Group 2

For our team presentation, we touched on many important topics centered around communication and leadership skills. Being part of this team reminded me of the importance of effort, communication, acceptance, and giving the best of you to attain the intended goal. We discussed several topics, but the one that stood out the most for me was the subject of family dynamics, which entails communication and leadership roles. I can definitely relate more to that one, it hits home.

To me, home is where you are shaped as an individual, as a productive member of this society. I come from a large Hispanic family rooted on respect, belonging, support, and open communication. As in any family, our dynamic is not always perfect, but we are supportive, respectful, and considerate of each other. My two older siblings live in different cities due to school and work, but when all five of us are together, we interact in respectful and supportive ways. My parents always taught us to have each other’s backs because blood is thicker than water. I know I count on my siblings and parents on anything I set out my mind to do, whether it is an adventure, a trip, life, or school-related situations. My mother is an elementary school teacher who recently became a high school librarian and fosters a nurturing environment in school and at home. Since my siblings and I were small, she always instilled in us the core values of respect and acceptance. We have open ways of communication, and I can openly talk to her about any topic. She listens with an open mind and gives me sound advice. I have learned to trust her instincts and value all the support she gives me. She fosters interdependency and love for each other She has taught us that we must build each other up to have a strong foundation. Our relationship is also cohesive, where we feel safe with each other, celebrating our victories and finding ways to fix our mistakes when things do not go as planned. When disagreements arise, we feel we are free to express ourselves without being judged, find common ground, and continue to build strong bonds. When we give our opinion or feedback on something, all five of us listen with intent and seek to better understand each other, it makes me feel seen and validated. My nucleus motivates me to be a good human being and that makes me feel great.

My dad is the head of our household, more action-oriented but very supportive. He is the authoritative leader, and my mom is the empathic one. My father always strives for ethical decision making, striving for excellence. He has always instilled the importance of clear communication as ways to demonstrate ethical behavior. When seeking jobs, or performing at school, he has taught me that honesty is your best presentation card. When you get others to trust you, you can conquer any situation. To me, tris goes both ways, you must earn it and once you have it, it is so valuable! I have also learned that determination will take you places you never imagined and I learned that from him. He has worked tirelessly for 30 years on the same insurance company and when he was only 21 years old, he moved to the US with only $800 in his pocket. To me, he embodies the definition of hard work and determination.

My parents also look for positive ways to face adversity. I feel blessed to be part of such a dynamic and entertaining group! When I have a family of my own, I would instill the same core values I learned from my parents and foster the love and camaraderie to my children that my siblings and I have. I would love for them to have each others back like my siblings and I do.
